FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PIANO TUNING

Q: How often should I tune my piano?
A: New pianos-Three times the first year, then twice a year.

Older pianos-At least once a year, sometimes twice depending on usage and environmental conditions.

Q: Should I tune my piano if it is never used?

Q: Where should I place my piano?
A: If possible, keep your piano away from outside doors and windows, and away from heat and air ducts and return vents. Also, direct sunlight and fireplaces could be harmful.

Q: What is concert pitch? What is relative pitch?
A: Concert pitch is A above middle C = 440 vibrations per second. A piano must be tuned to concert pitch if it is being used professionally or simultaneously with other instruments or the stereo. A piano should be tuned at least twice a year to maintain concert pitch. Relative pitch is below concert pitch. Pianos which cannot withstand the tension of a concert tuning are better off and more comfortable tuned to relative pitch.

Q: What is voicing/ tone regulating?
A: Voicing/ tone regulating is sweetening the tone to bring out the piano's true personality. This eliminates unpleasant harsh, tinny tones.

Q: What is action regulating?
A: Action regulating is adjusting the inside of the piano action to achieve maximum performance. It is like fine tuning the engine of your car.
